Broken Chords Prove It's Not About Quantity But About Quality

An incredibly long and exhausting day meant that the Rock City Basement was the last place I wanted to be at 10pm. Yet, after watching Broken Chords, I have absolutely no regrets.

Broken Chords emerge with a readily apparent balls out attitude, to a grand total of four people. Unfazed and unhindered, they kick off like they’re playing to hundreds of hungry fans. Lead singer Joe Finnigan has Essex written all over him, yet sounds absolutely nothing like you’d expect, with a voice that perfectly complements their 70’s inspired brand of Rock N Roll.  A prettystraightforward opening riff quickly becomes an animal of a song when Joe adds his fierce to the mix.

The drums fell out almost immediately into the set, but rather than worry about it, Joe and Aid (Bass, vocals) embraced it and played even harder to compensate, which is to be respected. If we sidestep the fact that Aid probably caught some sort of major infection from standing barefoot on the Rock City floor, the lack of shoes is a pretty cool touch, helping to make the trio stand out from the rest of the bands in their scene.

"Your Moves Affect My Brain" acts as the highlight, demonstrating the massive sound that this three-piece manages to create. I’d love to see how the band perform on a big stage, if only to see how the ever-flamboyant Joe makes use of all the extra space.

Throughout the set, several groups of drunk lads appeared – initially mocking the band to show off to their mates, yet quickly turning around and paying proper attention upon the realisation of true talent on the stage. Even as Joe grows visibly drunker by the song, his ability to perform remained unhindered – like a true rock star.

With plenty of riffs, soaring verses and a voice that is unmistakably rock and roll, Broken Chords have a lot to work with and the potential is huge. Get ready, they’re gonna take over!
