Spookyland Share Their Secret In Soho
Published
A last minute invite to a secret gig? That’s an offer not to refuse, and with the band being called Spookyland and the coincidence of Halloween dawning upon us, well this secret is even more enticing.
Down the stairs of the lavish Shadow Lounge in Soho to a small room with a close proximity to the stage, the intimacy of this undisclosed gig is set to be a treat for the lucky bunch that have put on their fancy shoes to be here. After a line up of other acts warmed up the stage the size of the crowd increased and Spookyland enter the stage in all black attire.
With a definitive fan base already the band are welcomed by cheers and smiles, flying all the way from Sydney they're ending their tour in England and it’s rewarding to see that their music is appreciated in little old London town.
Spookyland’s Indie sound is peculiar yet attractive. With lead singer Marcus Gordon’s unique twang it’s a sort of, “Do I like it? Yes I think I do” thought process as Gordon’s vocals are the type you haven’t heard before or in a very long time, reminiscent of the Mod era maybe? But nonetheless it works and especially the band as a whole, with their rhythms and melodies the band create a build up in each of their songs making it climatic but not overpowering, just enough satisfaction to take you to the next song.
However, not only myself but the crowd was left feeling unsatisfied on this occasion as twenty minutes into Spookyland’s set an interruption occurred. Thinking it was a technical difficulty with the Sound Engineer my relaxed stance remained. “We’re gonna have to cut you short guys, sorry!” My stance immediately straightened up and my smile curved to a frown. “Cut short?” I shouted along with other crowd members leading to protests of one more song and to not exit the stage.
Unfortunately Spookyland started packing away but not forgetting to thank the crowd. This was completely unexpected and unfair as Spookyland did not fail in leaving the crowd linger for the possibility of a chat, a glimpse and a hope of seeing the band again.
