Warpaint's Inspirational End To Their European Tour
Published
After rescheduling their European tour from late 2014 to spring 2015, the team at Subba-Cultcha have eagerly been waiting for this moment....
Playing at Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith on a Thursday night (they do say Thursday is the new Friday) I arrived at the venue with a smile bigger than a Cheshire cat. With their self titled 2013 album cover as a backdrop and fairy lights swept from each side, the set was atmospheric as their shadows were cast upon the large scale image. Going straight into the much loved “Undertow” which was played early on, Warpaint’s set list was picked carefully providing a mixture of old and new songs; the statement “here’s something new” always catches your breath but when Warpaint provide new material such as “No way out” and “I’ll start believing” that catch of your breath is one that you want to be taken away.
The unique style that is Warpaint was conveyed greatly, with the ever so beautiful harmonies from Theresa Wayman and Emily Kokal performing flawlessly, their live sound was impeccable and sounded better than on record (now you can't say that about many bands). The haunting, rumbling bass sound and infectious moves from Jenny Lee Lindberg provide that twitch in your neck making you jam along with them. Finally, the underlying beat that ultimately holds these psychedelic moody rock songs is drummer Stella Mozgawa.
Together this L.A. foursome put a new meaning to the term “Girlband”, creative geniuses, female empowerment and cool chicks is just a few definitions of this coined term... I mean I definitely want to hang out with them and jam all day, who wouldn’t? But putting aside my jealousy of not being a Warpaint girl, this band create ambient Art Rock music and perform so effortlessly. As far as gigs go it was one of my top 5 and I am very much looking forward to seeing them again... I've already bought the ticket in my head.
