Bleach Blood (Jamie Jazz, ex-The King Blues) release new EP "Darling Don't Dive".
Bleach Blood "Darling Don't Dive" (7/10)
Fronted by Jamie Jazz, formerly of The King Blues, and ably supported by drummer Invisible Frank (possibly not his real name), bassist Charlie Elliott, guitarist Paul Mullen and vocalist Linda Harrison, Bleach Blood have been steadily building their profile over the last eighteen months or so. The band's first EP "The Young Heartbreakers Club" arrived in December 2012 and demonstrated a band with an ear for a tune and gained strong radio play. Two singles have appeared since and now Darling Don't Dive arrives ahead of their debut long player, offering further evidence of a band perhaps still searching for an identity but with every chance of breaking through. Perhaps of slight concern is the fact that the strongest track here, Anything Anything, was already released as a single in early 2013 making this feel very much like a transitional release, looking back while simultaneously offering teasing glimpses of an exciting possible future. If the lead track Darling, Don't Dive Without Me is an (admittedly excellent) hook looking for a song to hang itself on, closer The Circle and the Square suggests a level of complexity in composition and production which will hopefully be further explored on the album when it arrives. It's unfortunate that second track S.O.U.L. is a somewhat embarrassing listen, to the point where you can't help wishing they'd stop trying to demonstrate an A.T.T.I.T.U.D.E. they're clearly uncomfortable with and focus on the bits they're becoming rather good at. As such this isn't quite the "perfect storm of melodic passion and dirty electronic beats" promised by the press release and at times it tries a little too hard to be all things to all people. But that doesn't detract from a band that are, on the evidence of this and last years releases, very much one to watch. Touring currently and with an album pretty much ready to go, 2014 could be an interesting year for Bleach Blood... Available for Free Download Nowbleachblood.net/darlingdontdive
