Kill It Kid Killing It At The Oslo
Published
Kill it Kid... sold out show... East London. Everything here seems good to me, but my expectation of good turned amazed by the end of the night.
Up stairs in the new venue Oslo, into the dimly lit room a sea of figures mainly in leather jackets and wearing black fill the room. The words “Kill it Kid” are printed across the back wall and as four figures emerge on stage, a roar of applause and chants ignite the packed space.
Picking up his guitar lead singer Chris Turpin creates reverb to warm up the crowd as their cheers become heightened. With just a few strums of his instrument the sound is already intense and definitely credit to the venue, the scratchy sound is immediately attractive accompanied by Turpin’s vocals that are so reminiscent of Jack White along with the huskiness of Black Stone Cherry and Audioslave.
A beautiful contrast is pianist and vocals Stephanie Ward, she reminds me of Taylor Momsen but obviously much less annoying. Stephanie’s vocals are so rich and deep which I love about female singers and her chemistry with lead singer Chris Turpin is highly intriguing but shows the band as a whole have great communication which is what makes them so enjoyable to watch.
But ultimately the music this band creates is just mind blowing with their rustic tone and Blues Grunge sound it’s no wonder they are playing sold out shows. With an obvious similarity being Band of Skulls, Kill it Kid bring something different, mainly the fact that their sound is darker and more grungey but I don’t doubt this band will soon have the same success as Band of Skulls.
With an intense, electrifying instrumental and the reverb from the guitar, a voice-over echoes the now empty stage in the dark red and blue lights. A girl screams “fuck yeah” and the crowd demand more, but what happens next was so intricate and interesting I couldn’t help but smile along with the band. The crowd start to clap a rhythm which grows and grows to the sound of the introduction for Kill it Kid’s track “Run”. This acapella is soon intensified by Turner’s electric guitar and the night is ended on a rocking high!
