Martha Reeves Shows Why She's A Star Of Motown

The mere mention of the name Martha Reeves should grab your attention.  A true Motown legend, with a discography that includes the likes of "Nowhere To Run", "Heatwave", "Jimmy Mack" and of course "Dancing In The Street", it's fair to say that stars don't come much bigger.  So when Subba-Cultcha was offered the chance to see her perform at The Brooklyn Bowl in London with the (new) Vandellas, Harriet Flook jumped at the chance to go along.

Boo Image

Martha Reeves - the one, the only, performed at Brooklyn Bowl last Friday. At just over 70, she still commands all the respect she deserves. Her history, her background, you go to see the legend and boy does she not dissapoint.

Her voice is as impressive as ever. Whilst not as powerful as when she was younger, she still captivates you as you watch in awe. The band too, follow her every move as she worked her way around the stage cutely bowing to us as she thanked us for our company.

With every song, every cover there is an anecdote to go alongside. Surprisingly with excellent comedy timing. Her cover of The Beatles, "Something" REALLY got the crowd going. Joking that it was her turn to hit London forty years later. With every chorus the audience jumped in, arms up, singing it all back to her. And she loved every minute.

Her energy was infectious. Despite clearly tiring she kept going. With all the hits; "Jimmy Mack", "Heatwave", "Dancing in the Street", "No Where To Run".  And hitting it out of the park every time. She played what everybody wanted to hear.

There wasn’t a point that the crowd stopped moving.  If you can, see her. There’s a reason Martha is a Motown great.
