Yelle Live... What's 'Pop' In French?
Published
After a decade of producing music together, French three-piece Yelle took to the wet streets of East London to celebrate. Subba-Cultcha went along to watch, obviously.
The evening was something of an exclusive, being the only UK date on the group’s world tour. There are worse venues in the capital that could have been selected for the occasion; Village Underground has both beautiful aesthetics and fantastic acoustics. It suited Yelle perfectly.
Flanked by two drummers, synchronised in movement and attire, singer Julie Budet played the role of front-woman with aplomb. Orchestrating a party atmosphere over the course of the hour-long show, Budet sung and danced her way through album-spanning crowd-favourites such as ‘Safari Disco Club’, ‘Bouquet Final and ‘A Cause des Garcons’.
The band’s third album, 'Completement Fou', released last year and produced by record-spinning guru Dr. Luke – the brains behind material from Kelly Clarkson, Flo Rida and Ke$ha – has definitely left a pop impression on Yelle’s approach to music. The Francophone’s recent touring with Katy Perry also hasn’t slipped by without influence; several costume changes only added to the sense of spectacle at the Shoreditch venue.
As previously discussed in an interview with Subba-Cultcha, Budet has admitted that the visual element to live performances is something that the band takes very seriously. Fueled by their prominent artistic streaks, the elaborate stage show rendered the crowd’s inability to understand the French lyrics superfluous.
There’s just so much else going on to keep your attention. And it was fantastic because of it.
