Kevin Rumley’s Debut Dazzling Psychedelic EP ‘VI’

Kevin Rumley's debut EP, ‘VI’, arrives as a startling and poignant exploration of emotion. Thematically, the EP is centred around Kevin’s moving life story; when he was serving as a marine, an IED struck and took life of his closest friends, and nearly his. On the anniversary of that day, the 7th of April 2024, Kevin honoured the momentous moment with the release of his debut EP ‘VI’ twenty years on.

What is so interesting about this release is that you can’t interpret each track as an individual song, but more a snapshot of a feeling, expressed through stunning synth work, psychedelic guitars and hauntingly beautiful harmonies.

The differing sonic landscapes of the EP transition through different feelings and emotions. There’s an unwavering optimism that flows through the EP, channelled through the melodies of the harmonies that swim in and out of the soundworlds. The guitar layers are magnificent; the riffs and melodies intertwine and weave around each other with a playful air whilst the steel pedal guitar sails over it all.

‘Ohiopyle’ is a clearly a fan favourite, with over eleven thousand streams on Spotify alone. Kevin’s harmonies elevate the track into an ethereal realm. Whilst it boasts an airy atmosphere, with sweeping pedal steel lines and soft synths, there’s a punchy drum line that grounds you and brings you back to earth. Its a very refreshing listen.

Kevin Rumley is a seasoned drummer in the North Carolina music scene, having worked with artists such as Tyler Ramsey of Band of Horses, Wildebeest, Electric Owls, and Bandazian. ‘VI’ marks an exciting step into the solo spotlight for Kevin Rumley, as he lets us into his colourful soundworlds and sonic landscapes.
