The Drums Provide 20-Somethings With A Way To Relive Their Teens At Scala

“Let’s Go Surfing”, “Down By The Water” and “Forever And Ever, Amen” don’t you recognise these tracks from your iPod classic back in the summer of 2010, with your skinny jeans and indie Cindy headbands? The Drums were back in London with a sold out show at the Scala where twenty- something’s can relive their teenage musical years.
Though I imagined the demographic for tonight’s show to be rather young, I was surprised to see some older crowd members, but then I remembered that this is music were talking about - there’s no specific demographic and besides The Drums are fun! Coming on stage to pinnacle droplets from a synth, the pulsating sound fills the room and draws the howls to a silence eagerly awaiting the first song.
The atmosphere for this particular gig oozed fun, with bouncy tunes from The Drums; the band do a fantastic job of creating Indie Electronic music that is exciting and enjoyable making it somewhat pop.
As the songs became upbeat the crowd became more and more stimulated with mosh pits and crowd surfing, the inner child of this crowd burst out. Playing tracks from their first albums “Portamento” and self titled album “The Drums” and the latest album “Encyclopedia” I couldn’t help but notice the music was more fun from the older albums and that the latest lacked something. However the stage presence of the band and peculiar yet interesting dance moves from lead singer Jonathan Pierce was enough to get the crowd going and slightly distract them from the weaker new sound.
All in all it was a great night to reminisce your teenage years and dance around with your friends, this time with a cider in hand legal of age, and after an extended encore with about 5 songs it proves that you can’t let go of The Drums.
