Joshy Connor
‘Love Unknown’ is the latest release from London-based singer-songwriter Joshy Connor. Having made music for over a decade, the experienced artist has steadily been expanding his ever-evolving discography. After a brief hiatus from releasing, ‘Love Unknown’ marks a significant new chapter for the artist, as this release showcases new sides to his artistry and sound. Initially, the lyrics of ‘Love Unknown’ were conceived as poems during his break from music. Since then, they have been transformed into a collection of eleven songs, all sharing stories of his experience with an incredible intertwining of genre and style.
From the indie-folk stylings of the opener ‘Ten’ to the gentle musings of the concluding track ‘Jasmine’, Joshy Connor’s vocals are a grounding and captivating force in this album. As the sonic landscape of the songs moves from folk, to neo-soul, to electronic, his impactful vocal tone and presence sew all the songs together. Whilst it could be said that this album is firmly in the folk and indie category, there is a sprinkling of artistic choices that make you think otherwise. ‘Wild,’ a track that was previously shared as a single, and ‘Lighthouse’ burst out of the folk landscape with a rich R&B and neo-soul feeling. Joshy Connor brings some groove and funk into the mix with these tracks, swaying from the softer sounds of ballads like ‘I Have Waited,’ ‘Jasmine’ and ‘North’. One aspect of each track that ties them, however, is the catchiness of each song. Joshy Connor has a knack for crafting memorable, catchy hooks, and there’s not a song on this album that doesn’t have you humming along before the end of the first listen. No matter what genre Joshy Connor floats into, his ability to write a memorable hit remains. ‘Love Unknown’ is an incredibly impressive launch back into releasing for Joshy Connor, as he carves out his path in the music scene. The craftsmanship and realisation of the whole album are astounding and are sure to set him up as one to watch in the indie-folk realms.
