36 Crazyfists Rediscovered In The Rescue Rooms

Have you ever had a band or artist who you really liked and then suddenly stopped listening to for no obvious reason? For me, that was 36 Crazyfists. Until their performance at Rescue Rooms, they’d seemed to have just disappeared, with no new material in years. Alas, whatever the reason for their absence, they’ve come back stronger.

The main support of the night comes with arguably the most Alaskan name possible – All Hail The Yeti. With a somewhat disappointing lack of yeti-related material, this support act felt like they were lacking a little something, yet it’s difficult to pinpoint what that may be. Nevertheless, their dark, heavy brand of metalcore was enough to sufficiently prep the crowd for what was to come.

When 36 Crazyfists take to the stage moments later, the yeti-shaped hole in my heart was suddenly filled. Brock Lindow (vocals) is a huge, towering figure of a man in the darkness, with a beard that’s reminiscent of Hagrid. Wasting no time in heating things up, the band kick off with "At The End of August", instantly opening up the Rescue Rooms floor to create the first of many pits of the night.

Much of the set served to send the crowd back 10 years to 2004’s "A Snow Capped Romance", with a few essential tracks appearing from other albums. The rest of the set showcased music from the band’s upcoming album, 'Time and Trauma'.  Now, two decades into their career, it’s refreshing that they haven’t followed the typical path and stripped down their music more and more with each album. The new material possesses the same powerful riffs and characteristic vocal work as expected, and with choruses that beg a sing along, it’s clear that 36 Crazyfists are far from finished.

Throughout the set, Brock’s overwhelming passion and his appreciation of this Friday night crowd are so clear that his talks of buying everyone a beer after the show are actually believable. Besides some technical difficulties out of their control, the band put on an excellent show, leaving everyone wanting more. Perhaps the timeout was all that the band needed to come back fully refreshed, because one look at them now will erase any doubts regarding their future.
