Remember Monday
Remember Monday are the UK female Country trio who made quite a stir on The Voice back in pre-'Rona times (2019, was there ever such a carefree time as that?!) and won Best Group at the UK Country Awards that year. Now the band are back with a radio-friendly, catchy country pop pleaser which will resonate with pretty much anyone having to take a stand and get their rant on.
'Nothing Nice To Say' has Country written all over it: all the country sensibilities packaged perfectly for radio ears. Yes, formulaic to some extent - very catchy - fast-paced and hooks aplenty with some great harmonising from the band. The sound is incredibly summery and upbeat which, in this icy November chill, is a little disconcerting. However, it is the 'fed up'/ 'had enough' anger explicit in the lyrics and pace of the track which firmly grabbed my ears and is very relatable indeed.
'Nothing Nice To Say' is much more a feminist proclamation as it is a rant at being messed around or cheated on by an individual. Moreover, it vocalises the anger at how girls are conditioned growing up, the male stereotyping of women and girls, battling sexism and misogyny, the blame-shaming of how women and girls dress and appalling and outdated assumptions still present in our wider society. It echoes the #MeToo movement, #EqualPay and more ... and, with great energy, channels the frustration and 'calling it out' for all women, everywhere. Also, a big shout out to strong mothers empowering their girls. Amen to all that.
Sounds heavy? No, it is real life as experienced by the artists and indeed, a large part of the population of the planet. We're in an age now where this stuff is long overdue being resolved. Nice one Ladies, keep your shout on! This is promising stuff and there are apparently further singles to come. It will be interesting to hear what else they have up their sleeve. Meanwhile, if you need some good constructive energy to empower you: have a listen! Recommend.
