Wax On Water Deliver A Clever Reworking Of The QOTSA Track "Mexicola"

Mexicola (Single)

Wax on Water

Wax on Water are an alternative rock band from Camden, London and are renowned for putting their own unique spin on alternative rock by layering up on the eclectic influences, fusing the genres and hurling a fistful of their own unique magical musical dust on top. Their new single is a unique take on the QOTSA Josh Homme penned track “Mexicola” and unlike most of their previous output: “The Drip - Part 1” and “The Drip – Part 2” EPs and the sixteen-track album also called "The Drip" - this release is more of a solo affair with guitarist Steven Blessing taking a back seat on this occasion.

It is clear from the off that this version of the track is both respectful of the original but also (in true Wax on Water style) a unique twist on it. The solo working of it allows Damaris to own it entirely and really reinterpret the song with clever lyrical additions and a vision that utilises her vocals and keyboard skills to full electro-goth effect in a uniquely crafted ‘response’ to the protagonist in the original Josh Homme penned track. This adds another intriguing slant on the song which (I don't think) has been done before. Yes, there are plenty of 'straight' cover versions on Youtube if you seek them out but it's a well-trodden path and typically Wax on Water choose to avoid cliche and instead completely reinvent it from another perspective.

Die-hard QOTSA fans may be startled at this imaginative reworking but, fear not, it is refreshing to have a band breathe new life into a classic album track, paying 'Homme-age' (see what I did there) whilst also adding new depth. That is a rare thing indeed. Recommend. While you're at it go seek out their recent album "The Drip" on Spotify and bask in its uniqueness.
