Representing THE FUR’s 7th single since his first release exactly a year ago on 18th June 2021, The Light was written by THE FUR for a friend who was struggling with panic anxiety, and trust me when I say that the sincerity and purity of his intentions really shines through. He clearly feels strongly about his friend and his support is very genuine, as the lyrics make clear.
The Fur explained that the song came to him in September 2020 and worked on it over the next few months, but nothing much came of it. Thankfully, he picked it up again this year with producer Sebastian Meyer. And wow, I'm grateful they did, because the result is an Ariana-like pop tune that automatically lifts your mood within moments.
The song starts slowly with LA-based Korean American singer Ashley Alisha singing deeply and beautifully about mental health struggles, letting us know that this is an emotional song. This does a brilliant job of setting the scene and explaining the types of feelings that this song is addressing. The chorus then acts as a support system and source of hope, with its wonderfully uplifting Nordic dance beat and optimistic lyrics that reassure the listener that they have the light within them.
This song is much more versatile than you may think. I can imagine it going down a treat in loads of different settings; 2am in the club? Definitely a floor-filler. LA pool-party in the middle of summer? No doubt everyone will get up and dance. Featuring on Ru Paul’s Drag Race as a lip sync battle song? Yas queen! Uplifting and inspiring songs like this one are always going to go down well.
