Longfellow's Cool Headline Show In Hoxton
Published
You know when you hear a song and you think “Wow, what is this?” That’s how I felt upon hearing Longfellow’s “Where I belong” and it just stuck in my head. So when I heard that Longfellow were playing a headline slot at the cool Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen I jumped at the chance to attend.
Wearing all black, Longfellow appeared smart but stylish; and diving right into their set the band were confident. Excited to hear more of their material after “Where I belong”, I was slightly put aside when the first few songs seemed to be average, no doubt the songs were good and easy listening but that was just it. I began to worry that “Where I belong” would be the encore song and the only good song, my mind became fixated on this one song and that the justification of this band would rely on “Where I belong”.
However, as always, I was wrong. Longfellow performed “Where I belong” in the centre of their set list mentioning the obvious recognition from Chris Evans Radio 2 show, and soon followed some great songs, “Medic” and “Polaroid” definitely stood out, this is where I recognised a pattern in Longfellow’s music. The songs that were softer and climatic proved to be more powerful and fit the style I believe they should stick too, yet stating that after performing at a birthday party their gloomy style was a bit mood killing. Longfellow decided to create more upbeat songs such as “May the light” but watching this band perform I felt a connection and was taken away by the softer songs.
So whether you like upbeat indie music or on the opposite end of the spectrum- the gloomy intense indie sound, Longfellow supply both of these demands, so who wouldn’t be a fan? But if you need convincing then “Where I belong” is the track that’ll make you love these guys.
