Punchy Reimagining Of Bowie’s Heart-Breaking Valentine’s Day

Valentine's Day (Single)

SPIZZENERGI

The Seminal English Punk Band most renowned for their single and album “where’s Captain Kirk?” are back with a vengeance with this punchy reimagining of Bowie’s Heart-breaking Track “Valentine’s Day”. With heavier distortion and more aggressive zest in the vocals, the band manages to respect the vision of the original track, the emotional pull of its subject matter, while also eliciting new heartache in the form of nostalgia for Bowie himself.

The song starts with a punchy kick drum with less of the glossy finished of the original track, letting the grungier guitars and less polished post production bleed through in the instrumental introduction. The Vocal performance only adds to the chaotic sonic structure of the track. Vocalist “Spizz” delivers an emotion-packed rendition of Bowie’s original vocal that somehow manages to do the subject matter of the track – a school shooting – with more tact than the original. The lyrics are dark and heart wrenching, the original song was often criticised for over polishing the vocal performance for the sake of commercial viability, something which the singer of this cover seems to understand very well.

Tragedy in poetry is often difficult to display through music and interpreting someone else’s work and forging a new vision with it is challenging for even the most talented musician. But “Valentine’s day” by Spizzenergi manages to achieve a perfect balance between improving on the past and respecting the roots. Spizz and the band really come through on this first release of the new year, hopefully, a good omen for what is to come.
