The Stars (Single)
Nick Heyward
“Challenging”: this is the first word that comes to mind when thinking about Nick Heyward. After band Haircut 100’s breakthrough in the early 1980s, Heyward successfully pulled off a solo career. As a matter of fact, this time saw not one, not two but three of his tunes in the Top 20 UK single charts. Included in this list, his famous ‘Whistle Down The Wind’, ‘Take That Situation’ and also ‘Blue Hat For A Blue Day’. And while more than 20 years have passed, the singer still manages today to realise a complicated task in the music industry: keeping your signature while keeping up with musical trends.
‘Stars’ is a perfect representation of that particular skill: the song opens up on a very funky beat along with some typical Heyward-80s-style vibe chords on the synth. The more you go into the song, the more it forms part of the current pop-indie-rock trends, a bit in an Absynthe Minded way. Lyric-wise, Heyward is far from his ‘Love Plus One’ era, disclosing shamelessly to his audience an unquestionable love for someone – an action that would’ve probably been harder for 20-year-old Haircut 100’s lead singer to sing about.
“You’re the secret of the universe / You’re the secrets of the stars / You’re the reason for the two of us / Firing arrows through our hearts” - a romantic and happy tune sang by a happy Nick Heyward, news that we can only appreciate. After being in the spotlight for years, living the ups-and-downs of show business, Nick shows through this tune and in fact, through his whole ‘Woodland Echoes’ album (in which ‘Stars’ is featured), that he currently is living his best life. And we can only be happy for him.
