Kagoule Set The Standards In Leeds

Kagoule are yet to release their debut album,'Urth', though they already have quite a buzz about them. The three-piece band from Nottingham played the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury last year and they have also supported the likes of The Growlers, Temples, Iceage, Drenge and The Wytches. Playing a free show at Leeds’ Belgrave Music Hall + Canteen alongside The Voyeurs, Fawn Spots, Weirds and ZoZo, on 25th April, Kagoule command the stage and demonstrate why there exists such a buzz about them.

From the get go, the band draws in a fully engaged crowd, which significantly increases throughout their set; this is not surprising as Kagoule with such a distinctive catchiness. Whilst their sound is reminiscent of 90s grunge music, they are very much their own band. There is a solid dynamic between vocalist/guitarist Cai Burns, bassist/vocalist Lucy Hatter and drummer Laurence English and Kagoule play incredibly tight, which only goes to make their fuzziness a whole lot better. Their set comprises of some of their well known songs, "Adjust the Way", "Gush" and "It Knows It", which when played live confirm what is felt when hearing these songs recorded; they are a band to be watched.

Other songs played that will be on the album 'Urth' are "Glue" (a stand out song for capturing the crisp yet off-beat drumming of English), "Greenbeefo", "Central Wing" "Mike" and "Empty Cup". All of these prove that Kagoule’s album will not disappoint, with their infectious riffs and slightly disjointed sound. It is "Empty Cup", however, which really stands out. Noticeably thrashier and heavier than the rest of the set, Hatter, who has harmonized with Burns up until this point, unleashes brilliant blood curdling screams into the microphone. Following on from this, Kagoule end their set with the familiar, yet tireless, "It Knows It". Ending on a high, the set by no means disappoints.

Kagoule have so far demonstrated why they are a band not to be missed; if their show is anything to go by then 'Urth' will be simultaneously thrilling and terrifying. In light of the fact 'Urth' is the band’s first record, it will be exciting to watch the band grow and develop their distinctive sound. 'Urth; is set for release on 21st August, via Earache Records.
