Wyvern Lingo Make An Impact at Brixton Academy

As 9pm rolled around and supporting act of the night, Wyvern Lingo, where due on stage, the 5,000 capacity venue was already brimming. The large crowd appeared eager to embrace the County Wicklow based trio (who are also self-professed good friends of main man of the night Hozier), and once they finally took stage they were greeted with welcoming cheers and applause.

Fans of Hozier, like myself, were already familiar with Wyvern Lingo’s vocalist and keyboardist Karen Cowley - Karen having collaborated with Hozier on the sweetly haunting track ‘In A Week’ which appears on his debut album, in which she lends her melodic vocals which harmonise beautifully alongside his. So as she and her fellow band members Caoimhe (vocalist/drummer) and Saoirse (vocalist/guitarist) took to the Brixton stage and introduced themselves, the crowd responded with excited optimism, awaiting what Wyvern Lingo as a band in full would have to offer.

And what they did have to offer was an upbeat yet mesmerising brand of pop-folk, with the three band member’s triad of beautiful harmonies combining irresistibly with the fierce delivery of their lyrics. Each song was uniquely captivating but stand-out songs in their seven song set included their latest single ‘Letter To Willow’ - in which pop-folk merges with a prevalent R’n’B influence and comes together in an uber catchy chorus; one that has firmly cemented itself in my head ever since hearing it.

The ripping bassline running through the song also deserving of a mention. Another personal and crowd favourite of the night was a cover version of Alt-J’s ‘Left Hand Free’. Wyvern Lingo’s skilful harmonies and haunting vocals lent themselves perfectly to this song, whilst simultaneously helping to create a unique interpretation of it.

Each of the band’s songs were met with a tremendous reaction from the highly energetic crowd, who by the end of the set seemed hugely satisfied with what had just transpired on stage, fully in support of the emerging Irish band. They were also left newly hyped and in great anticipation for Hozier to make his appearance next on stage, to serve as part two of what was to continue to be a fantastic night filled with great live music.
