REVIEW gig The Dirty Youth Manchester Club Academy 15.01.16

Just Playing Dirty

I can't think of a better way to spend a Friday evening than reviewing a live band, especially when it's someone I have never seen or heard before.

The Dirty Youth were on the menu tonight and served up a real treat. All the way from South Wales and boasting a couple of albums in the can already, they blew the growing crowd apart.

From the opener ‘I’m not listening to you’, with big sound and a catchy chorus, they stamped their authority on the place. By ‘Alive’ they had the crowd in their hands and had a one man mosh pit, by Just move on’ it was a big win all round.

The five piece had a formula, a passion, a presence and a set of pure quality. I loved the drummer, Freddie Green, with a Clem Burke manic style, but they have a lead vocalist in Danni Monroe, who looks the part and delivers with verve and attitude, with quality in her voice, a little attitude and a stage presence to boot.

Already established as a studio and touring band, I wondered how they would perform tonight. From a 10,000 crowd at the Download Festival to a couple of hundred boozy students on a cold night in Manchester could phase some bands, but this was a full-on, no holds barred gig of the highest quality.

I was so impressed I checked them out on YouTube (as have several million before me) before putting pen to paper. This is no flash in the pan, The Dirty Youth are the real thing. Check ‘em out for yourself and see what I am talking about. I'd like to say that this is a band going places, but they've already been!

Oh, and Danni, purely my opinion... keep the hair blonde!
