Garry's Psychedelic Beats For Nana Nora

Nora Lillian

Garry Todd

Nora Lilian is named after Garry Todd's grandma & the first thing that grabbed my attention (& that made me want to hear the album) was the cool cover that features the lady herself & Garry as well who is just about to cut a hedge or practice his topiary or something.

Garry Todd is from Sunderland & he has been lucky enough to spend a lot of time chasing the sun travelling between Australia, the UK & Ibiza. He releases music both by himself & others on his own label 'Contemporary Scarecrow' but this new album is released by BPitch Control. Garry has become a central figure in the Sydney club scene & indeed much of this new album was written & created in Sydney.

This is a clever & accomplished album with an edgy undercurrent that lifts it from the norm & that makes it stand out from the most dance music I hear. It has some memorable tracks & for me that is important. This is an album that has a hypnotic dark edge with a touch of paranoia combined with some neat down tempo grooves. There is a clear touch of psychedelia here as well.

There are three tracks that really caught my attention: 'Time Goes On' (featuring Nat Page) draws you in with a hypnotic motornik beak & staccato vocals, this is the first track & it is a good opener as it makes you very interested to discover what rest of the album will be like.

'Motives and Thoughts' is essential late night listening with its psych undercurrents that remind me of 'Sabres of Paradise'. This track has some cold dark edges that catch you unawares when you least expect it.

'Whats Ya Name' has a chilled down tempo groove that feels eminently suitable for the early mornings when you are getting sleepy.

The whole album sequences together perfectly & ends on a Balearic beat high, the more I listen to this the more I find to like.
