Storm Tower

I have a confession to make, I love the reggae genre of music in all its forms, whether that be Bob Marley, UB40, Steel Pulse, Linton Kwesi Johnson, or the lighter Ska music of The Selecter, The Specials or even Madness I care not. Once that bass beat kicks in and dictates the mood and movement of an audience, that’s me... off to another planet.
I think it was The Band on the wall in Manchester in 2102 that I last saw Dreadzone. In between times, we all just grew older and wiser I guess.
Tonight, Dreadzone support the Levellers on their latest tour. Along with Ruts DC, they make up a line-up of quality I haven’t witnessed for many years, but Dreadzone, with their polished, forthright and thoroughly entertaining set had the audience moving within the first few beats of the opener.
A mixed audience of oldies and youngsters alike, punks with Mohican’s and hair bedraggled hippies, their music was loved by all. Led by the brilliantly charismatic MC Spee, the band deliver their well-rehearsed and beautifully crafted material with a confidence that few bands can match. They may be many on stage, but everyone knows their place in the music, weaving intricate patterns in seamless fashion.
"Rise Up" (I think it’s called) was easily my favourite of the night, but when quality and quantity of this magnitude is served up, it isn’t important. Just relax, let your ears take the strain and float away on the back-beat.
There may have been a storm in town tonight bringing high winds and torrential rain outside, inside the building, Dreadzone created a man-made storm and rode the waves of sound and emotion until the storm was spent… Christmas is coming, treat yourself to a gig to remember, there’s still time to see the best gig, and band, of your year. It just may be Dreadzone.
