Eskimo Callboy @ Rainbow Birmingham

Eskimo Callboy are a band that I’ve wanted to see for a long time now, so to say I was excited was an understatement. With a location the size of a garage I was unsure how the night would go, but as soon as I heard the first band I was assured that the evening was going to be great...

After a short set from a local band, Cabin Boy Jumped Ship jumped in with a few songs. They are a small metalcore/electronic band from Leicestershire, with music comparable to Capture the Crown. Being a fairly new band formed in 2013, they don’t have much music yet, but what they do have is produced to a high quality. Included in the set was “Wasted Away,” their single released May this year.

Next up were The One Hundred, who combine elements of metal with rap and hip hop. Most songs played, including the final song “Unleashed,” were from their 2014 EP “Subculture.” Quite a few people had come out to see them, so there were quite a few moshers.

Finally, Eskimo Callboy: from the moment they jumped on stage to “Pitch Blease” the room was full of energy. Unfortunately there weren’t really enough people for proper mosh pits to happen, but this wasn’t enough to ruin the night.

The majority of the songs were from their new album “Crystals” but some older songs such as my favourite “Muffin Purper-Gurk” were also played. There were no holdbacks at engaging the audience: lots of confetti was being fired throughout the show and at the end they stayed around for the afterparty and to meet everyone. For the encore they came back and covered “Cinema” by Skrillex and finished with “Is Anyone Up?” I found the show so good that rather than leaving slightly early, I had to run back to the train station!

COMMENTS

  • Interesting...
  • For such a dramatic act, I had no doubt they would nail it live. I was very unsure about their new album but I knew it was a style that would pay off live.
