Memories of The Factory

Something special happened at the Academy tonight. I could feel it in the audience as soon as I arrived. There’s been a lot of talk about the New Order/Peter Hook split and who should be performing the songs, however none of that mattered tonight.

As the opening chords of ‘Ceremony’ rang through the room it didn’t matter what camp you belonged to, it just send shivers down every fans spine. Hook, playful as ever, knew instantly he had the audience from that moment. And he knew exactly what they wanted.

A 7 song New Order set kicked off the proceedings that included classics such as ‘True Faith’, ‘Temptation’ and ‘The Perfect Kiss’. This was followed by a Joy Division ‘Closer’ set. ‘No Love Lost’, ‘Digital’, ‘Atrocity Exhibition’, ‘Isolation’ are given a welcome that is justly deserved and sound fresher than ever.

Then it’s onward to the ‘Unknown Pleasures’ album. ‘Disorder’, ‘Day of the Lords’ and ‘Candidate’ sound awesome. Hooks voice has definitely improved and add to the atmosphere and feeling of this album.

However the highlight for me in this set is ‘New Dawn Fades'. It’s a brilliant rendition of an angst ridden song that fills me with emotion every time I hear it. ‘Shadow Play’ and ‘She’s lost Control’ bring back memories of the Factory Club all those years ago.

But the icing on the cake has to be the encores. ‘’Atmosphere’, ‘Warsaw, ‘Transmission’ and the eternal ‘Love will tear us Apart’ are a perfect end to a fantastic night.

And there you have it. 32 songs spanning some of New Order/ Joy Division’s finest moments. And you know what. It didn’t matter who sang them, it was bloody brilliant
