Mum Does The Washing

Joshua Idehen

Poet and musician Joshua Idehen unveils Mum Does The Washing, a remarkable EP blending spoken word, jazz, and innovative electronic sounds, showcasing his unique ability to weave narratives that resonate deeply. The project, created alongside Swedish producer Ludvig Parment, balances introspection with infectious rhythms, making it both thought-provoking and club-ready.

The EP opens with its namesake track, “Mum Does The Washing,” where Idehen transforms everyday household chores into profound life lessons imparted by his mother. The warm humor and poetic cadence have already caught the attention of tastemakers like Jamz Supernova and Huw Stephens. Next, “Could Be Forever” delivers a heart-wrenching exploration of selfless love, inspired by real stories of sacrifice. With delicate instrumentation, it paints vivid portraits of perseverance, offering listeners a powerful emotional connection.

“Tactics For Survival,” born during the pandemic, juxtaposes reflective lyrics on resilience with a driving beat. Featuring Estonian pianist Hanakiv, this track melds somber piano lines with a meditative rhythm, creating a balance between contemplation and movement.

Idehen closes with a soulful rendition of Talking Heads’ “Once In A Lifetime.” Enhanced by a gospel choir, this cover imbues the iconic song with a personal, hopeful twist, capping the EP on a note of introspection and renewal. Rooted in his Nigerian heritage, British upbringing, and Swedish influences, Mum Does The Washing transcends boundaries.

As Idehen prepares for a headline show at London’s MOTH Club on December 7th, this EP solidifies his place as a visionary in modern music.
