Rising MC Hollow Profit has just released of his new album, titled CUIBONO? Real name Brody Burke, the project is his first full-length LP. The three years of hard work invested into this album are sure to pay off for hip-hop fans old and new.
Produced by beat-maker 47 Quid, the album demonstrates Hollow Profit’s commitment to pushing musical boundaries with jazzy instrumentations and pulsating boom-bap beats while delivering the authenticity fans have come to love with lyrics speaking from personal experience and strife.
One of the album highlights is the lead single “Sicilian Gold”, featuring Detroit rap artist Ronnie Alpha. It is Hollow Profit’s most popular track to date and has garnered widespread respect from critics. Inspired by a track of the same name by Ghostface Killa and Westside Gunn, the Wu-Tang influence is apparent and admirable. Lyrically, the song is a celebration of the finer things in life, which is apparent in the opening line: “Sicilian gold, All black sweaters yeah, Striped up socks where I haul my cheddar”. The luxurious feel is brought out in the vintage, ethereal instrumentation featuring hazy vocalisations and a classy piano riff.
Another essential track is “Birds and Bullets”, in which Hollow Profit and New York artist Ben Beal team up on a fun take of Ben’s 2020 song “Birds Aren’t Real”. The chemistry between the two artists is palpable as Burke acts as his musical alter-ego, Crimson Dot. The flawless delivery by both artists ties together brilliantly with a saxophone sample true to the old-school musings of Hollow Profit and a drum-beat evocative of Ben’s lo-fi style.
Overall, CUIBONO? proves essential listening to any old-school hip-hop head. Hollow Profit can craft complex wordplay, his flow is impeccable, and his throwback 90s’-style beats are both nostalgic and fresh. This rising star is one to be watched.
