Girlpool do it for the girls at Scala
Published
Girlpool more like girl cool, these two LA chicks brought sassy punk rock to London last week and sure as hell did not disappoint. In fact, they left such a mark on us London folk that I didn’t stop hearing about them or seeing them in local music guides for days. Little do they know, Girlpool are the new alternative London favourites.
Duo Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad appear shy and timid, small giggles and smiles at the crowd show thankfulness. Yet when they play the room is filled with this atmosphere that is so overpowering you feel somewhat frozen, the girls are so in sync with each other the intricateness of their material is increased by 1000. There’s nothing you can really do but to watch and absorb Girlpool, you are drawn into their presence and feel kind of star struck.
Despite the fact that Girlpool have no drummer, which initially I thought was crazy but watching them perform and really listen to their music; you start to forget about a drummer. With songs like “Emily” and “Before the world was big” they really stand out and are obviously crowd favourites as the lyrics are sung back to them, which the girls look shocked at. Girlpool seem to have a new and fast fan base that show a great amount of love towards to them, I can proudly say I am now a Girlpool fan and I’m sure those of you who listen now will be too. It’s hard not to like Girlpool as they appear genuine and obviously immensely talented.
Girlpool are quirky with their effortless and unusual style and of course with their musicality. A new kind of music has been showcased here at Scala and I’m happy to have witnessed it. These girls convey the message that you don’t have to follow the rule book and being different is very much accepted and ultimately works! Good on you girls.
