Wynona Bleach 'I Deserve That'

Wynona Bleach (Single)

Wynona Bleach

I love a great rock riff, or a loud guitar. But over the years, I think it’s possible to get either accustomed to the noise, or perhaps you can get unimpressed by modern attempts to recreate the the notions of earlier days.

As a rock fan, I love the anticipation of being given the opportunity to review a new song, or band. Particularly as my own tastes tend to be slightly dated these days. And I feel guilty almost for that. I almost feel I should apologise to new bands, who are giving it their all, because I often find myself thinking ‘sorry guys, you’re just not that good compared to what got me hooked on the rock genre in the first place’

But, one has to be opened minded enough to accept that’s what OAP’s say when they talk about the past. Please, don’t tell me I’m an OAP already!

So you’ll be pleased to hear that I was pleasantly surprised, not angry, when I overflowed the milk in my morning coffee routine. I always have the stereo up pretty loud when listening to new tracks, so I can be sure to hear all the nuances and more subtle notes hidden behind the anticipated wall of noise. The initial grunge guitar riff that immediately bangs on your ear drums is what caused my distraction and the subsequent need to mop up the spilt milk.

But far from crying over said milk, I found myself almost hearing Wynona Bleach’s new single as sound track number to a happy scene in a modern day Waynes World or the next American Pie movie. Upbeat, down tuned, melodic and chunky, the main riff is a real head banger.

As it typical on song structure, the guitars back off the volume a touch, and powerchords are replaced with something more open, allowing for what are unusually softer vocals to accompany the harder noise of the instruments. It doesn’t take longer before the overdriven P Bass thumps out the lead riff again. Think early Nirvana, like maybe something from Bleach (no pun intended, or maybe that is the idea?!), and you wouldn’t go too far wrong.

The song moves at pace, continuing to ‘punk along’ the tracks, something I really enjoy. At just 3 and 3/4 minutes in length, ‘I Deserve That’ is an upbeat, grunge becomes punk, becomes phaser effected guitar riffing, festival fun times rocker!

I’m looking forward to hearing, and seeing, how this band from Belfast continue to grow on there 6 years of rocking so far. Expect great festival performances in 2025!
